The Garfagnana Valley One and a half hours drive North from Pisa it is for sure one of Tuscany’s best kept secret’s, when the rest of Tuscany is busy with the hustle and bustle of people and traffic the Garfagnana is having a quiet and peaceful day thanks to its location in the lush Serchio River valley north of Lucca and Pisa, surrounded by a natural barrier of two mountain ranges, the Apennines and the marble mountains of the Alpi Apuane. Cities are close by but you cannot see or hear them. . The drive from Pisa takes you via the historic walled city of Lucca – it takes about an hour to walk and 1/2 hour to roller-skate around the top of this wall. There are also trains from Pisa which take you up through the Apian Valley to Castelnuovo –3 miles from where ABM Tuscana will be situated. This is a market town on Thursday mainly selling clothes, utensil etc it also hosts many bars and restaurants where in season the fresh porcini (wild mushrooms) are to die for. In the early autumn there are chestnut festivals on the hills where they are roasted over a fire and when dry they are ground into pale brownish flour. Chestnut polestar with pork bones used to be the staple diet in this area but it can be served in many differing ways. This place is unlike like southern Tuscany or Chiantiland as it has become to be known as most of the villages here are inhabited by locals. Lunch at the local restaurants still costs 8 euros for 3 courses though they do cater for tourists also... so it’s a good idea to accompany a local builder or you may get fobbed off with menu touristi.
